I honestly cannot thank the team at One to One Ellesmere Port for all they have done for me, my partner and my little boy.

I had never heard of One to One before and neither had any of my friends or family so when I found out I was pregnant and searched online for my options in care I was interested in finding out more about their services because I liked the idea of having the continuity of care with familiar faces especially being a first-time mum.

I arrived at the centre for my booking in appointment and was made to feel very welcome and all of the midwives were extremely friendly. Over the next months of my pregnancy I attended a lot of the classes including the Active Birth and Early Days workshop and the Meet the Midwife sessions. It was at these sessions where I first saw the water pool and after discussing with the midwives the many benefits of having a water birth I then decided I would love to have a home water birth. This was a very new concept to me as all of my friends and family have had their babies in hospital. As a first-time mum I was very apprehensive about having a home birth, but I had fantastic support from my midwife Lucy who reassured me that it would be a lovely relaxed environment to bring a baby into the world in the comfort of my own home and I am so glad I made this choice.

On the morning of the 6th May 2018 I was out in the garden enjoying the sunshine and me and my partner had planned to go on a picnic later on in the day, however as the hours passed I didn’t want to venture out of the back garden as I had noticed that my bump had dropped lower than normal so we enjoyed our food on a picnic blanket on the lawn instead. At around 5pm I felt some tight pains in my stomach, so I decided to put my feet up and rest. An hour later my waters went so I rang the midwives at One to One. They advised me to relax at home and call them back when my contractions became more frequent. Fifteen minutes later my partner called Tom back to let him know things were progressing. Tom said he would make his way to our house and we were to make our front room as comfortable as possible. This was such an exciting time for my partner and I knowing our little boy was on his way.

When Tom arrived, he supported me with breathing techniques through my contractions and gave me words of encouragement. Tom and my partner blew up the pool and filled it with warm water. It felt amazing getting into the pool with the warm water surrounding my bump. After a short while in the pool Tom informed me that I was fully dilated and he could feel the babies’ head so he called Lucy to let her know that I was going to have my little boy soon, as she had been my named midwife throughout my pregnancy, and within the hour Lucy (who was not on duty) arrived at my house to support and meet the new arrival; if that’s not dedication then I don’t know what is.

After a short while of pushing with a bit of gas and air and a lot of love and support from my partner and two amazing midwives my little water baby was born at 23:10. It was an incredible feeling seeing your little boy being born, holding him into your chest and having your loved one clamping the cord in the comfort of your own home. Tom and Lucy stayed with us as a new family to make sure we were all doing okay and to offer advice and guidance. When they left, early hours of the morning, we enjoyed our first night as a new family in our own beds. It was such a lovely and unforgettable experience.

Thank you so much One to One we are so grateful for all of your support throughout our journey as a family. The aftercare you have provided has been amazing and you are always there when we need you! I can’t recommend One to One enough and all the staff that work here are so hard working and friendly.
